The 2027 Kia Seltos Unveiled: First Look at Alberta's Newest SUV

Kia built the first-generation Seltos for buyers who wanted more space than a sedan without the bulk of a three-row SUV. The 2027 model rebuilds that formula with a longer wheelbase, more cargo room, and a hybrid powertrain option that includes Kia's first electric all-wheel drive system on a hybrid SUV.

The redesign arrives as Alberta drivers demand more from their vehicles. Whether navigating Highway 1 through the Rockies, gravel roads to Kananaskis, or winter commutes through Calgary and Edmonton, the 2027 Seltos handles it all. The new generation is 60 millimetres longer in wheelbase, translating to more rear legroom and a flatter cargo floor. The cabin gains 25 millimetres of headroom, and the upright greenhouse design improves sightlines in all directions.

Three Powertrains, One Platform

The 2027 Seltos offers three distinct powertrain options. The LX, EX, and EX Premium trims use a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder paired with Kia's Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) for smooth, predictable power delivery.

The X-Line and X-Line Limited trims feature a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 hp, routed through an 8-speed automatic transmission. This turbo setup delivers quicker highway merging and more responsive throttle input.

The third option is the HEV - the Seltos' first hybrid powertrain. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder hybrid pairs with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive improves efficiency, while the available e-AWD system adds a rear electric motor for on-demand all-wheel traction.

This is the first time Kia has offered electric AWD on a hybrid SUV, designed to deliver power to the rear wheels only when needed. Fuel economy figures will be released closer to the HEV's late-2026 on-sale date.

Exterior Design: Utility Refinement

The 2027 Seltos follows Kia's "Opposites United" design philosophy - clean lines, bold angles, and flush door handles that sit flat until you approach. The result is a more aerodynamic profile without sacrificing the upright stance that makes a crossover practical.

Standard wheels are 16-inch alloys. The EX and EX Premium trims upgrade to 18-inch wheels, while X-Line trims feature black 19-inch wheels.

X-Line trims also add unique bumpers, side sills with dark gun metal accents, and distinctive styling elements. New exterior colours include Terrain Brown and Frost Blue.

The longer wheelbase improves proportions, while the boxy profile maximizes interior volume and creates strong outward visibility - crucial when navigating tight parking lots or merging onto Deerfoot Trail.

Interior: More Space, More Screens

The longer wheelbase delivers 25 millimetres of additional rear legroom and headroom. Cargo capacity improves significantly: 1,817 litres behind the first row and 786 litres behind the second row.

The new Seltos features a two-step foldable luggage board on select models, creating a flat load floor when rear seats are folded and adding hidden storage when upright.

The cabin uses the same "Opposites United" philosophy. The squared-off steering wheel, open centre console, and clean lines connect the Seltos to newer Kia models. "Blades" extend from the dash into the front doors, creating an enveloping effect.

X-Line trims feature an exclusive monotone black interior with SynTex upholstery, mesh headrests, and standard four-way lumbar support. The X-Line Limited adds front Relaxation Seats with reclining capability and an enhancing footrest.

Technology: Nearly 30 Inches of Display

The 2027 Seltos includes a standard 12.3-inch digital touchscreen. Available configurations add a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 5-inch climate display panel - nearly 30 inches of combined screen space.

The ccNC infotainment system supports over-the-air updates for remote software improvements. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Multiple USB-C ports span both rows, with front ports between the centre console and climate controls, and rear ports integrated into first-row seatbacks.

Safety: Standard and Available ADAS

The 2027 Seltos includes comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as standard. New-to-Seltos features include Advanced Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning and Front and Reverse Parking Distance Warning.

Standard ADAS includes:

  • Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • High-Beam Assist
  • Intelligent Speed-Limit Assist
  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection

Hands-On Detection monitors steering input, while Safe Exit Alert warns rear passengers if a vehicle is approaching when they open the door.

Available features include a 3D Surround View Monitor, Blind-Spot View Monitor displaying video feeds on the digital display, and Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go functionality.

Why the 2027 Seltos Delivers

The 2027 Seltos is the first subcompact crossover in Kia's lineup to offer a hybrid powertrain with electric AWD. The e-AWD system provides traction when needed without the weight and efficiency penalty of full-time mechanical AWD.

For Alberta drivers facing variable conditions - dry highways, icy intersections, gravel roads - the e-AWD system offers a middle ground.

The redesign addresses a common complaint about subcompact crossovers: interior space. The 60-millimetre wheelbase increase and 25-millimetre gains in legroom and headroom make the 2027 Seltos feel closer to a compact SUV. The 1,817-litre cargo capacity is competitive with vehicles a size class larger.

The technology suite is another differentiator. Nearly 30 inches of display space, over-the-air updates, and comprehensive ADAS are features typically found in midsize or luxury SUVs, now available in the subcompact segment.

The 2027 Kia Seltos is a complete redesign addressing core priorities: space, efficiency, technology, and capability. The hybrid powertrain with e-AWD is a segment-first feature positioning the Seltos as a practical choice for buyers wanting all-wheel drive flexibility without committing to a larger vehicle.

The increased dimensions, expanded cargo capacity, and upscale technology make the 2027 Seltos a strong contender in a crowded segment.
